Why Hope Matters in Fiction
Many of my favorite stories explore difficult subjects.
Grief.
Loss.
Trauma.
Heartbreak.
Regret.
These experiences are part of being human, and fiction gives us a way to explore them safely. Through stories, we can witness struggle, confront difficult emotions, and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.
But no matter how dark a story becomes, I believe hope matters.
That doesn't mean every story needs a perfect ending. Life doesn't work that way, and neither should fiction. Hope isn't about pretending that pain doesn't exist. It's about believing that pain isn't the end of the story.
Some of the most meaningful moments in literature occur when a character chooses to keep going despite uncertainty. They don't know how things will turn out. They simply decide that the possibility of something better is worth fighting for.
That's the kind of hope I try to explore in my own writing.
Not easy hope.
Not guaranteed hope.
Real hope.
The kind that survives difficult circumstances and continues to exist even when the future feels unclear.
Perhaps that's why we read stories in the first place.
We aren't always looking for answers.
Sometimes we're simply looking for a reminder that we're not alone.
